A participatory photography project
This is a project in motion. What you see here is a collection of photographs and stories from young Somali women. The women portrayed are amazing, talented individuals who represent a new face of the Somali community. Some were born in Somalia, others born in America or other places around the world. Yet, they all identify as Somali. They also identify as Muslim and some as American. Their role is invaluable as they become leaders in their families and their community. They understand these roles in a myriad of ways. It is not just the variety of roles and identities that defines them, but how these roles intertwine and mingle to motivate their actions and their futures.
This is not a documentation of a group of people, but a snapshot of one small part of the Somali community. Through the process of participatory photography, our hope is to bridge communities by increasing understanding of a different aspect of the Somali community and addressing difficult questions through artmaking and this exhibit.
